Having fun on skis in the heart of the Alps in Trentino

Here in Trentino, right in the heart of the Alps, is the winter holiday you certainly didn’t expect. Sports, culture, wine and food events and entertainment are the ingredients that make all holidays a great success, both in summer and winter. The wonderful Dolomites attract all kinds of guests -families, young couples and the most dedicated sports enthusiasts. Between November and April, you can experience the best in downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and ski-mountaineering. And then there’s snow-walking, with snowshoes and sled-dogs: everything, in fact that can be done on snow and with snow.

Over 300 modern ski lifts come into operation, with a total of 800 km of slopes that are always in tiptop condition. As well as the snow that covers 90% of the pistes, the snow-depth is guaranteed by an inimitable team of technicians with first class snow grooming equipment.

Winter offers a wealth of sensations and experiences to be savoured and never forgotten. The two most important features of the skiing season here are the technology and the unbeatable panoramas, with long ski slopes served by modern, fast and comfortable ski lifts, pistes with all levels of difficulty, always snow-covered and absolutely safe to ski on for the whole time. A skiing holiday in Trentino is sure to be a memorable experience, not least because of the wonderful, unforgettable Alpine scenery.

„RESPECT – Safety is not a game“, the campaign for greater safety on the ski slopes

Dolomiti Superski always dedicates great attention to the question of safety on the ski slopes, promoting year after year its own awareness campaign. Following on from a close cooperation with ski champions Manuela and Manfred Moelgg in the past winter ski seasons, Dolomiti Superski this year is making the most of precious suggestions coming from those having participated in the 2010 / 2011 competition which asked ski enthusiasts for their own ideas without any imposition from ourselves.
A high number of responses identified “respect for others and awareness of one’s own limits” as an important element to ensure the enjoyment of all on the slopes in an even safer manner. In essence the importance is to remember that one is not alone on the slopes but is sharing the space with others who are equally enthusiastic about skiing, and that, by regulating one’s own speed and style to one’s actual capabilities, it is possible to reduce significantly the number of dangerous situations and risk of collision.
The key themes are SAFETY IS NOT A GAME – Respecting others and keeping within your own limits is the way for all to enjoy themselves and “TAKE CARE – Be careful, respect others and know your limits”
The key points of the safety campaign are available for all to see on leaflets and posters at skipass outlets and the uphill lift facilities. Dolomiti Superski brings to your attention that in Italy the use of a helmet is compulsory for children aged under 14 and is strongly recommended to all above that age also – ski in safety!

The new craze among the young is called Freestyle, which sees the number of fans grow every year. For teenagers, jumping, grabbing and doing other aerial performances has now become a cult. For this reason, Dolomiti Superski is presenting again in coming 2011/2012 winter season, the “DROP IN” Freestyle Day. In freestyler-speak, “Drop in” means the first approach to this fun specialty. “Drop in” is also the warning a freestyler shouts before launching himself onto an obstacle course in a snowpark. Everyone is warned he is setting off, and acts accordingly, to reduce risks. Teaching the Freestyle techniques and safety rules, respecting nature, this is the aim of the Freestyle Day. In cooperation with 23 ski and snowboard schools in the Dolomiti Superski district, fun days are to be had for the 12 to 18s, who wish to try an exciting new experience on skis or board, maybe even upside down.
From mid-January 2012 we’ll be off: twice a week it will be Freestyle Day in the 21 Dolomiti Superski Snowparks, every Wednesday for those on a week’s holiday and every Saturday for the weekenders. So anyone looking for halfpipes, stairs, walls or rails can have fun, whether on twin tip skis or snowboard. Specialist Freestyle instructors will reveal the tricks of this new trade to groups of up to 10 kids per instructor, to guarantee the best learning methods. From 10 am to 4 pm, the day will be action-packed, making best use of the state-of-the-art snowparks. A day’s course costs 53.00 Euro per person – or, including Freestyle equipment hire, twin tip skis, 77.00 Euro, ski pass not included. Find out more on the printed info guide, on dolomitisuperski.com/freestyle, or at the ski and snowboard schools participating in the program in the Dolomiti Superski district.

Lifts renewed and slopes even more fit for fun and … safe!

One of the fundamental standards which distinguishes the Dolomiti Superski philosophy is the constant research and investment in modernising lift systems and slopes, with safety and comfort uppermost in mind. In consequence the aim is not to open up new ski areas but to improve the existing ones, paying attention to all details and rationalising connections for easy access and enjoyable days on the slopes. Much attention is dedicated to the daily preparation of the slopes with more than 300 snowcats being allocated to the job so as to guarantee perfect conditions for all skiers and snowboarders.
In summer / autumn 2011 considerable investment has been made in new connections between ski areas and in the renewing or replacement of lift systems. In Valle Isarco, the ski areas of Jochtal and Gitschberg will be connected by the new cabin lift “Gaisjoch”, whilst at Kronplatz a new cabin lift “Ried” with an adjoining slope will connect the extensive summit area with the railway at Perca. Nine lift systems in the areas of Cortina d’Ampezzo, Kronplatz, Alta Badia, Val Gardena/Alpe di Siusi, Arabba/Marmolada, Valle Isarco and Civetta have been replaced. These are just some examples to illustrate the efforts of Dolomiti Superski to satisfy the wishes and the needs of skiers and snowboarders.

PEJO3000: New for winter in Val di Sole

New in Peio: a cable lift with two cable cars, each with a carrying capacity of 100 people, that from the Tarlenta area (at an elevation of 2000 meters) reaches the ruins of what was once the “Mantova” mountain hut located at 3000 meters. A modern and capacious lift system that goes all the way up to Valle della Mite, giving skiers the chance to plunge down an amazing and thrilling 8 km descent to Peio Fonti.
Peio is the oldest tourist resort in Val di Sole, located in the heart of one of the historic Italian National parks, the Stelvio National Park, created more than 70 years ago to protect this vast area. A truly natural heritage that surrounds this location and a perfect destination point for families, becoming even more fascinating when immersed within the winter atmosphere. The Peio ski area is located on the slopes of Mount Viòz, offering skiers state of the art ski lifts like the Peio – Tarlenta cabin lift. In addition to admiring the natural surroundings of the Stelvio National Park from the numerous slopes, including the long slope that descends from the ruins of the “Mantova” mountain hut and from the “Doss dei Gembri” mountain hut, where it is often possible to catch a glimpse of chamois and deer, you can also go snowshoeing on your own or with a “Park Guide” by following one of the many itineraries that lead to mountain shelters or enter into the wood. Tourism in the Peio mountain resort began as early as 1650 due to the well-known therapeutic properties of its three mineral water springs. Today, Peio is still a first-class thermal center. It is possible to “revitalize” oneself, also during the winter season from Christmas to Easter, in the new thermal spa center with specialized treatments that use the beneficial properties of the Peio mineral springs and the beauty treatments of the new wellness center. The Health Center and the Wellness Center are definitely the perfect places to relax after a day on the slopes.

Technical details:

Start elevation: 2000 m a.s.l.
Arrival elevation: 3000 m a.s.l.
Carrying capacity: 100 people
Travel time: 5, 8 min.

The experience of reaching a mountain hutby snowmobile, on snowshoes or even on foot, surrounded by silence is unforgettable. Savour the striking atmospheres of an evening spent on the mountains, sitting in front of a fireplace and enjoying the flavours of Trentino’s dishes, before perhaps taking a thrilling sled ride back down by torchlight.

Dinner in a Trentino mountain hut is a unique experience. A voyage of discovery among a myriad of flavours, giving guests a chance to taste dishes such as grilled polenta with cheese or mushrooms, strangolapreti, orzotto and game as well as traditional cold cuts, salamis and cheeses, and taste the much cherished deserts and grappas that traditionally bring a mountain meal to a close.

In winter, dinner is served in mountain huts throughout Trentino’s skiing districts, with guests travelling up the slopes on snowmobiles or snow-cats – and in some cases even making their way back down on sleds or using snowshoes.

Evenings in Val di Fassa at the Baita Ciampié in Val San Nicolò – a branch valley of the Val di Fassa – and at the Rifugio Fuchiade in Passo San Pellegrino are truly extraordinary, as are those in Val di Fiemme, at the Baita Caserina on the Alpe di Pampeago, the Baita Ciamp de le Strie on the Alpe di Lusia or at the Capanna Cervino in Passo Rolle.

In Val di Sole, wonderful evenings can also be enjoyed at the Rifugio Orso Bruno, at the Rifugio Solander or at the Malga Panciana in Marilleva as well as at the Chalet degli Angeli in Folgarida and the Rifugio Scoiattolo and Doss dei Gembri in Peio.

The Cascina Zeledria, Malga Ritorto, Malga Montagnoli and the restaurant Boch and the Stoppani Grosté in Madonna di Campiglio can be reached on snow-cats in the evenings.

In Paganella, visitors can spend the evening at Baita Pineta, Casina Bruniol and La Tana dell’Ermellino – which also provides horse-drawn sleighs for transport. The Stella d’Italia mountain hut is open in Folgaria, as well as the Rifugio Baita Tonda (Serrada) and the restaurant Malga Ortesino, while in Lavarone it’s possibe to dine at the restaurant refuge Tana Incantata on Mount Tablat.
